HOLY TULSI | BINDU (GURU BEAD)

Devotion doesn't require a perfect setting, an elaborate ritual, or hours of meditation. Sometimes, it begins with a single breath, a meaningful intention, and the willingness to return to the present moment.

The Tulsi Barrel 27+1 Japa Mala (Sumarni) honors the traditional practice of japa, or mindful mantra repetition, through a compact design rooted in Hindu devotional traditions. Handcrafted with 27 barrel-shaped Holy Tulsi counting beads, one distinct Bindu (guru bead), knotted cotton construction, and a traditional saffron-orange tassel, this mala provides a tangible connection to prayer, meditation, and intentional living.

Measuring approximately 10.5 inches in length, the mala features substantial barrel-shaped beads that provide a comfortable, tactile experience during mantra and breathwork. Its compact construction makes it especially convenient for handheld meditation, travel, and moments of reflection throughout the day.

Within Vaishnava and Krishna-centered Bhakti traditions, Holy Tulsi symbolizes devotion, purity, compassion, and spiritual protection. Its traditional connection to the Heart Chakra (Anahata) complements practices centered on unconditional love, gratitude, and service to others.

The Bindu, also called the guru or Meru bead, marks the beginning and completion of each round of meditation. It is not included in the repetition count. To complete 108 repetitions, move through the 27 counting beads four times, reversing direction whenever you reach the Bindu rather than crossing over it. The larger bead offers a natural opportunity to pause, reconnect with your intention, and begin again.

A STORY ROOTED IN DEVOTION

These Tulsi beads carry a history that began decades before they arrived at Mala for Vets. They came from the collection of Shuddhananda, a spiritual practitioner who traveled extensively throughout India during the 1970s and early 1980s and studied with the revered teacher Anandamayi Ma.

During his travels, Shuddhananda collected spiritual items, including Tulsi beads, for personal practice and his import business. According to the person who entrusted these beads to Mala for Vets, he sometimes brought beads to spiritual teachers for blessings or immersed them in the sacred Ganga River. Although the individual history of each bead cannot be verified, their connection to his collection reflects a remarkable journey of devotion and spiritual exploration.

After decades in storage, these beads have found a new purpose, continuing their journey through someone else's practice.

MINDFULNESS FOR THE WARRIOR COMMUNITY

For veterans, first responders, and anyone navigating life's challenges, the Tulsi Barrel 27+1 Japa Mala offers a simple opportunity to reconnect with stillness. Each repetition becomes a reminder that mindfulness isn't about achieving perfect concentration. It's about recognizing when attention wanders and gently returning to the present moment.
